Premium Surface Finishes

What Are Surface Finishes?
Surface finishes are the specific textures, smoothness and overall appearance applied to a plastic part’s exterior that affect how it looks and feels. They are a key part of the design and manufacturing process. They help make a product more attractive, hide tooling marks from injection molding, improve paint adhesion and enhance functionality – such as grip.
Surface finishes aren’t just cosmetic detail. They’re built-in characteristics that shape the final part’s look and tactile quality. They can be achieved in two main ways. One is that they can be built directly into the mold tool itself, by texturing or polishing the mold cavity so every part has the finish as it is molded. The other is through post-processing techniques such as sanding, bead blasting or etching after molding to refine or add texture to the part.
Types of Surface Finish Offered by Fathom
-
Dull Finish
Rough and unpolished with very little shine. Ideal for internal parts where appearance isn’t critical. It accepts paint extremely well.
-
Matte Finish
Smoother than dull with a soft, low-sheen look. Common for internal components, but also works externally for a subtle finish. Paint adheres well.
-
Semi-Gloss Finish
Smooth with a moderate shine. Great for external parts or internal components that need to slide easily or reduce friction.
-
Gloss Finish
Highly smooth and reflective, sometimes mirror-like depending on the material. Best for external parts where premium appearance matters most.
-
Custom Finishes
Tailored to your exact specifications. We can create specialized textures or polish levels to match unique aesthetic, branding, or functional requirements.

What’s the Difference Between Finish and Texture?
At Fathom, finish refers to the overall look and level of smoothness or shine on the part’s surface, while texture refers to specific patterns or tactile characteristics molded into the plastic itself. The finish is what you see visually, whereas the texture is what you feel and how the surface interacts with touch and function.
-
Finish defines appearance and sheen, such as dull, matte, semi-gloss or gloss levels.
-
Texture describes the actual surface pattern or feel, such as grain, pebbled or custom tactile elements that improve grip or hide marks.
Both are determined by mold tooling and processing, and together they influence how your part looks, feels and performs.
