What Is a Production Mold?

Production injection molds are designed for high-volume manufacturing and are built from durable materials such as P20 steel or NK80 stainless steel, typically lasting over 100,000 molding cycles.

You own your production mold, but it is stored at our facility, where we handle production runs based on your part requirements and cover all maintenance and repairs as long as parts are produced on-site. This setup eliminates the need for customer storage or tooling maintenance while ensuring the mold remains production-ready.

Design changes can be made to production molds as needed, with a Fathom engineer coordinating CAD updates and reworking the tool accordingly. Revised samples are provided for approval before production, and keeping the mold on-site allows for faster implementation, reduced downtime, and simpler coordination during part revisions.

What is the process for production injection molds?

01 Mold Production

The first step to have a mold produced for plastic injection mold is to submit a CAD file for review. The ICOMold team will perform a DFM and may suggest part design and tool changes. When the design is apoproved, mold production begins.

With production molds. we don’t ship the mold tooling to you or to a production facility of your choosing. We store your mold at our facility, and make production runs of your parts at your request.

03 Mold Maintenance and Part Revisions

We will maintain your mold, and even make repairs to it if required, for as long as you continue to have us produce parts for you. Plus, if you decide to make part revisions that require changes to your mold, the process is easier because we already physically have your mold.

Advantages of Production Molds

Advantages

  • Built to withstand higher volumes

Production molds are built using P20 steel or PK80 stainless steel, so they typically last over 100,000 cycles. This durability makes production molds ideal for long-running programs that require consistent output across hundreds of thousands of molding cycles.

  • You save the shipping

Since we house your mold in our facility, there is no shipping charge to send the mold to you or to a production facility of your designation.

  • Coordinated production runs

We’ll work with you to schedule and ship production runs of your parts whenever you require them.

  • Mold maintenance / repair

We will maintain your mold, at our cost, as long as you continue to run parts with us. We will also repair your mold if required. This reduces long-term ownership costs while ensuring the mold remains in optimal condition throughout its production life.

  • Convenience

Centralized tooling management simplifies logistics, scheduling, and long-term production planning.

Disadvantages

  • No immediate access to your mold tool

We will ship your tool to you or to a location of your choice on demand. But the process may take several weeks, due to overseas shipping logistics, customs and other considerations.

Materials Used for Production Molds

  • P20 steel offers an excellent balance of toughness, wear resistance, machinability, and affordability, making it a cost-effective choice for medium- to high-volume injection molding. Because it is pre-hardened, molds can be machined and polished quickly without additional heat treatment, reducing lead times while delivering durable, dimensionally stable tooling for consistent part quality.
  • PK80 stainless steel provides superior strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, helping extend mold life in demanding or high-precision applications. Its pre-hardened condition allows for efficient machining without extra heat treatment, giving customers long-lasting, stable tooling that performs reliably over long production runs.

Production Mold FAQs

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions

Q.
Who owns my production mold?

A.

The customer pays for the mold, and owns it – it is merely kept at our facility for us to make part production runs when required.

Q.
How quickly can I get a production run of parts?

A.

Our dedicated team will work with you to meet your production timeline requirements. We’re here when you need us.

Q.
Can I get production runs of my parts on a regular schedule?

A.

Yes. If you have standard part quantity requirements on a regular schedule, we’ll be happy to set up a schedule of regular production runs for you. Production molds are especially well suited for programs with predictable demand and ongoing production requirements.

Q.
What if my mold is damaged while at your facility?

A.

If anything should happen to your mold while at our facility, we will repair it, at our cost.

Q.
What if I change my mind and want to keep my mold in my own facility?

A.

The customer owns the mold, so we will gladly ship your mold to you at any point. Naturally, shipping charges will be incurred.
